Transforming theory into practice: Creating student-centered instructional activities rooted in the Framework

During summer 2019, the four reference librarians at University of District Columbia (UDC), an HBCU in nation’s capital, met weekly to review and discuss each part ACRL Framework for Information Literacy Higher Education. With our student population mind, we had two goals: establishing a team-wide shared analysis frame developing collection student-centered active learning activities, rooted Framework’s concepts, that could be mixed matched during one-shot embedded library instruction. Prior this project, were using limited group instruction activities not necessarily related Framework. found highly theoretical, making it challenging identify concrete activities. However, by deeply engaging with Framework, was possible create instructional theory, able expand repertoire used We also provide faculty firm examples how engages their students information literacy lifelong learning.
